CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Zidane Tribal
AGE: 16
CANON: Final Fantasy IX

CANON HISTORY: Here!
CANON PERSONALITY: First and foremost, Zidane's personality can be tied to his personal character quote from Final Fantasy IX - "You don't need a reason to help people." Most Thieves or rogue-type people aren't very well known for their charity or loyalty, but ZIdane is more a noble thief than not. He's a relentless optimist that believes the best in people, even if they don't believe in themselves. Even when other people might show restraint in encouraging people to achieve their goals, he doesn't. Even if it means agreeing to let a lonely 9 year old come with him on his journey. But then, he could tell she had already made up her mind. He's willing to work with the bad guy when Kuja captures his friends and forces Zidane to go get a Gulug stone for him out of Oeilvert, by threatening the rest of the group's lives.

He doesn't always get along with every single person. The laid-back part of his personality is also not infinite. This leads to conflict with a few other characters in the game. What he does with his conflict tends to reflect his relationship with the other characters. For Steiner, who is an adamant lawful good type to the point of being blind to moral gray areas, Zidane reacts to his open hostility by... not taking it seriously. And also poking fun at him whenever the opportunity presents itself. His nickname for Steiner is 'Rusty' owing to the condition of Steiner's armor, but he will bring Steiner down a notch whenever possible. It's also a sleight against Steiner himself. Amarant he has a bit more of an antagonistic relationship with, as Amarant constantly makes remarks about Zidane's personality and bearing, and Zidane takes those a bit more personally - likely due to the fact they have a bite to them that Steiner is not able to put into his remarks. He's not like that constantly, though - when they're willing to be civil, he's willing to be friendly.

Of course, Zidane wouldn't be Zidane without his other big personality point, and that being his love of cute girls. Sometimes working to his detriment, Zidane can be a bit of a skirt-chaser. It's mostly in good fun, at least. Mostly. Sometimes he gets a little handsy when he probably shouldn't (lookin' at you, that time he grabbed Garnet's butt and then tried to say it was an accident). Also sometimes to his detriment because he can't always separate the women that he's hit on, and say, will confuse when he asked one girl to go on an airship ride with him, with another girl he did not invite on the same trip. It's worth noting, however, that the further in with Garnet he falls, the less he hits on other women - though he still keeps flirting with her right up until he realizes he's getting serious with her. And when he's serious with her, he's very serious with her. She becomes all he can think about, and he does quite a lot with her in mind. He even comes back from practically the dead - when he went after Kuja - specifically because he loved her so much, he needed to go back and be with her no matter the odds of him dying.

He's a talented actor, and a good stage presence. Of course, some of that is up to how well the player enters in commands during the play at the beginning of the game, but there's no reason to not assume he did poorly. Furthermore, he has a flair for acrobatics, as seen in limited amounts during the game (though that's likely because of the limited capabilities of the Playstation 1) and more distinctly in Dissidia with his fighting style being a very physical acrobatic style. Furthermore, one of his victory poses, at least in Dissidia NT, is him standing on one hand with his daggers balanced on their pommels on his feet. He then kicks them up into the air, flips into a stand, and catches his daggers. He's always seen twirling or playing with his daggers, though, whether in the original game or the subsequent installments of Dissidia, owing to a high degree of coordination.

He's good at thinking quick on his feet - he has to be in order to be a thief, of course. It's shown when he frames Amarant for stealing something from a noble's house in Treno when it was actually ZIdane himself that did the crime. There are other times it gets him and his group out of trouble, and he's quick to make sure to get as many people out as possible. Even if he has to be the last one out.

So Zidane is a pretty positive, upbeat person from top to bottom, but it is possible to shake his entire worldview. The one time he was told what he was born, or to be most precise, created, for, he watched his whole world crumble beneath him. After that, he had a heck of a time trying to find any positivity in the world, pushed all his friends away - even Garnet, whom he definitely had come to fall in love with - in his poor handling of the truth of his existence. He isn't as stuck in it as his brother Kuja, though, of course. Kuja tries to destroy the world because he learned that he was going to die. ZIdane wouldn't have done the same thing, though, then again, Zidane is not nearly as vain and egotistic as his brother. Oh, it's there, all right, but it's more muted.

So, that's in a pretty significantly bad situation, does he have any other negatives? Well, yes. Actually. All of the above is sort of Zidane trying way too hard to seem far cooler than he actually is. His penchant for showing off and trying to impress people doesn't often backfire on him, but when it does, it's sort of spectacular. He's self-aware enough to realize that he's gone too far, after the fact, but up until then... he just pushes a little bit too hard to try to get people to like him... especially ladies. He has his self-doubts, but he puts on his bright smiling face and tries to push through even still. Worse still, even though he's enthusiastically supportive of other people, he doesn't often speak of his own problems, and tries to go at them alone. This is part of why it backfires so badly on him when he learns the truth of his existence - something he had been silently dreading being a negative thing. He's shared some parts of his past, like the first time he left Tantalus to try to figure out where he came from and what his birth family was like, with Garnet, but he doesn't really say anything to anyone else. And when he tells it to Garnet, he tries to spin it in such a way that it's not relevant anymore... when it really is to him.

Always willing to help out, always looking out for his team, always trying to stay optimistic and look on the positive side of life, even when it's difficult, Zidane is a good guy. He's a contrast to the previous two Final Fantasy protags with that, but he's never overbearing about his optimism, either. Sometimes stuff happens, and he's okay with that, too. He just has to overcome and adapt. He gets over his problems with his existence quickly enough, and makes sure to evacuate the rest of the Genomes from Terra when Kuja destroys it. By then he's learned what it is he wants to live for, what it is he wants to go forward for, and he has his faith back in his friends again. He's solved the theme of the game of Final Fantasy IX, so when Necron shows up, claiming that all life only exists to die, Zidane tells it that isn't it at all, and ultimately ends up helping out his entire world.
SKILLS/ABILITIES:
  • As a Thief, Zidane is very agile and has a high speed stat. He is quite proficient with the use of dual-wielded daggers, as well as something called a 'thief sword', which is just a two-ended polearm-like affix. He also has a STEAL command that allows him to lift things from enemies. This can turn into a damaging ability (Mug) with the right allocation of points. For the most part, that won't be super relevant as he won't really use Mug against other people, especially those he knows.
  • He has a Trance ability. This is based on the state of emotions of the user. FFIX describes it as borrowing energy from the malice of things attacking you, but Dissidia Jossed that one a little. It definitely seems to require a heightened emotional state in any case - the emotion does not necessarily have to be anger, however, and can be caused by other strong emotions like fear or a particularly strong resolve. His abilities in Trance in the original FFIX game are called Dyne moves, and are, in order of power: Free Energy, Tidal Flame, Scoop Art, Shift Break, Stellar Circle 5, Meo Twister, Solution 9, and Grand Lethal. All of the attacks are just various fancy energy abilities that do damage based on a multiplier of Zidane's base attack stat. In Dissidia, they return to do about the same thing but some of them don't need Trance to activate. Most all of them are just fancy powered up attacks with shiny lasers and sparkles.
  • Dissidia also has this weird thing where all the heroes can fly. Or, rather, they sort of glide around in the air until their stamina bar runs out. ZIdane is notable because his abilities in the game mostly rely on him being a fast aerial attacker, so he has an additional jump command he can use to stay up in the air. When he Trances, he also moves faster than any other character on the field that isn't using a charging-type attack.

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Skylar "Zeke" Garland - the 'Zeke' comes from the idea that he wants his stage name to be 'Ezekiel' when he's famous. So he's trying to get people to call him the nickname for now.
AU AGE: 17
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: His biggest physical difference is that he doesn't have the tail, or the fangs, of his monkey-like Genome form. The Final Fantasy IX Ultimania listed his height at 173 cm, which puts him at around 5'7"-5'8". Dissidia decided that, because of the somewhat SD nature of the art style of FFIX that his height there would be... significantly shorter than that. I am going with the FFIX Ultimania height.
AU HISTORY:
  • Zeke is a Recolle native! Or so he assumes. To be entirely fair, he's adopted, so he doesn't know much about his birth family, but he was adopted by a decent family otherwise, and saved from what could have been terrible foster care as a young child. He was adopted before he could remember being an orphan.
  • Family is the average, middle-class tax bracket sort. Not super rich, but never quite wanting for anything.
  • Only child. That he's aware of.
  • Grew up as the class clown and got into trouble a lot for being rambunctious as a kid. Aced English and all the artistic sorts of classes, though.
  • He taught himself all sorts of 'magic' tricks, sleight of hand, things like that.
  • He also does a little parkour. Not super hardcore, but anything to show off!
  • His parents were not amused, and were so so glad when they found a good outlet for him in high school - acting! He aces those classes, too.
  • At some point in high school, he decided he wanted to get his name out there, so he does some video reviews of movies that he goes to see and likes. He's a huge movie buff.
  • He also plays some of the most popular MMORPG as part of his slightly more dorky side. He mains a rogue/thief/whatever the equivalent class is, and is pretty darn good at it, when he plays.
  • He plans to stay local and go to Recolle University to save money. His family agrees, and is pushing him to go for scholarships to help the financial part of it.
  • On that note, his parents have a sort of mixed reaction to what he wants to go to school for. They recognize that if he hits it big, he's going to hit it BIG, but... the chances of that are pretty slim, and they don't want to see him wasting money on a degree that's just going to lead to him being a starving artist.
  • Ever the optimist, though, Zeke absolutely thinks the best of himself, and is dreaming of moving to either LA or New York City to hit it big being an actor after college.
  • Also, despite all his flirting, he's single. What is up with that??? Gotta get a girlfriend before anyone thinks he's not cool.
AU PERSONALITY: There's not much of a difference between Zeke and Zidane. The first biggest difference is that he doesn't have Garnet around as his love interest, so his personality is a bit more like early game ZIdane or Dissidia Zidane where he flirts more with girls than later FFIX Zidane where he's more focused on only one person. He also has a much more toned-down urge to find out about his birth parents. Considering he grew up in a pretty average, stable family, even if he was adopted, he has that family root there, but sometimes he thinks about finding his birth parents. Not too hard, though. Maybe when he becomes famous, they'll come to him!

He might also not be quite as well-traveled and world-wary as his canon self. He hasn't really left Recolle as a whole, and hasn't really been into seedy back alleyways to hone his street-smarts, but he isn't a naiive case. He just never grew up with thieves.
